I created Above Board in the summer of 2016 to document the people and places that I met while on the road while documenting adventures for the Outdoor Project. The Interior West is one of the few remaining places in the US where an old frontier-like land ethic is still normal—think of Joseph, Oregon, or Telluride, Colorado, places that are still somewhat wild and removed from progressive politics. I expected to find a type; I expected to find a reflection of rural America found in cultural representations of it. Instead, I found a diversity of perspectives that crossed the political spectrum.
